Show Hospitality to One Another
July 13, 2025
1 Peter 4:7-11
The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Offer Hospitality to One Another
1 Peter 4:9
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Greek word: philoxenia — love of the stranger.
philos = love, friendship.
xenos = stranger, outsider, foreigner.
Hospitality is not just social kindness… hospitality is gospel witness.
Hospitality is Rooted in Israel’s Story
Genesis 18
Abraham welcomed strangers—and in doing so, he welcomed God.
Hebrews 13:2
Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
Reference/Context…
Leviticus 19:33-34
When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
Exodus 22:21
Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt
Deuteronomy 10:18-19
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. 19 And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.
When we set the table, open the door, make room in our life, we are not just being kind – we are acting like Jesus.
When the church stops setting tables, it starts building walls.
