Everyday Idols – Week 1 (8-03-25)
Everyday Idols
Comfort
August 3, 2025
“Americans now spend about 93 percent of our time indoors in climate control, and entire cities wouldn’t exist had we not developed air-conditioning.” “The modern comforts and conveniences that now most influence our daily experience – cars, computers, television, climate control, smartphones, ultraprocessed food, and more – have been used by our species for about 100 years or less.” – Michael Easter, The Comfort Crisis
COMFORT IS A NEW CRISIS.
AN IDOL IS A LIE WE LIVE BY.
Exodus 20:18-19 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”
Exodus 20:20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
AN IDOL IS A LIE WE LIVE BY.
WHEN FREEDOM STARTS TO FEEL LIKE SUFFERING, WE WILL RUN BACK TO SLAVERY.
“as we experience fewer problems, we don’t become more satisfied. We just lower our threshold for what we consider a problem.” – Michael Easter, The Comfort Crisis
HOW HAVE YOU MADE COMFORT AN IDOL?
“Why do we need a comforter if we are always comfortable?” – Francis Chan
IDOLS ONLY GO WHERE YOU PLACE THEM.
ULTIMATUMS ARE THE ULCERS OF A HEART THAT WORSHIPS COMFORT.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO CARE MORE ABOUT CHRIST THAN OUR OWN COMFORT?
Revelation 1:17-18 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys to death and Hades.”
Revelation 3:19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.
What should we do if we find ourselves making an idol of comfort?
Be earnest and repent. Passionately turn around and run back to Jesus.
