Everyday Idols – Week 4 (8-24-25)

Everyday Idols
The Seduction of Security
August 24, 2025

It’s the lie we live.

As long as I have_____________. Then I will feel secure.

Security is an idol that promises peace, but delivers fear.

This is not a question of good or bad.
The real question, “is it a gift or a god?”

Asa’s Two Chapters

Chapter 1: Reliance and Peace
2 Chron. 14:2
Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.

He commands the people: …to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. Vast armies are pressing in…

So Asa prays:
2 Chron. 14:11
Then Asa called to the Lord his God and said, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.

2 Chron. 15:2; 4; 7
He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them…
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.

But then the test comes.

Lie: Look at what I have done!

Chapter 2: Comfort and Control
2 Chron. 16:3
Let there be a treaty between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”

Hanani looks Asa in the eye and says:

2 Chron. 16:7–9
Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen[c]? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand. 9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.

Asa’s story is Israel’s story, and it is our story.

Matthew 7:24-27
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

This is not a question of good or bad.
The real question, “is it a gift or a god?”
